This week, as we celebrate Occupational Therapy Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible work our Occupational Therapists (OTs) do every day.
OTs make a real difference in helping people live life to the fullest- supporting independence, promoting wellbeing, and empowering individuals to do the things that matter most to them.
Part of our clinical team at Accora is made up of five dedicated OTs who bring passion, creativity, and care to their roles every single day: Jayne, Mary, Nicola, Nicky, and Jenny. Together, they work across a variety of settings- each bringing unique skills and perspectives that make our service stronger and our clients’ experiences richer.
This week, we asked some of our Accora clinical team members to share a day in the life, to give us a glimpse into what being an Occupational Therapist really looks like.
Jayne
Jayne Brewer qualified as an OT in 1996 and has a wide range of clinical experience in acute and community settings. She is passionate about postural care and supporting individuals to maintain comfort, safety, and independence.
“I started my day with an early morning 20-minute walk with my dog, Bruno. It’s my favourite part of the day- fresh air, a clear mind, and time to think ahead about what’s to come.
Once everyone in my household was up and on their way, it was my turn to head off to Stourbridge to deliver a 'how you lie is how you sit' training session for a fantastic group of OTs and Physiotherapists working in Stroke rehab.
Before the session, Mike Sadler (our Account Manager) and I had a quick coffee and catch-up to make sure we were all set. The session went really well, and it was rewarding to see how engaged everyone was. We explored the importance of 24-hour postural management- how lying postures affect seated postures, and how equipment configuration can support posture, pressure management, and comfort.
After packing up, it was time to head home. I was greeted by Bruno, who is always pleased to see me! I enjoyed a quick cup of tea while catching up on emails before making dinner for the family.
The evening didn’t slow down much- it was off to football training with my daughter. I help coach her team, which is great fun, encouraging them to develop their skills and work together as a team. No two days are the same working for Accora; tomorrow I am in the office, filming some clinical videos!”
Nicola
Nicola Murphy is a dedicated and compassionate OT with experience in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Her experience spans oncology, surgery/vascular, wheelchair services, and elderly care.
“Today was a busy but rewarding day! I welcomed our Anglia Ruskin University OT student to our team, Tash.
I started my morning by travelling to Hackney by train- a nice chance to take in the city views before diving into a morning of training and meeting some lovely OTs working in the Borough of Hackney. Our morning session focused on 24-hour posture- the idea that how you lie is how you sit. The training highlights how sleeping and sitting habits affect overall posture and comfort.
Our Accora student Tash joined me during the session as my photographer! We explored practical ways to maintain good posture throughout the day (and night!). Lunch and coffee were on the go- a Pret Latte, of course!
In the afternoon, I travelled to Guy’s Hospital for a postural assessment session. It was wonderful to meet some old colleagues and support them with one of their patients needing a postural assessment.
By the end of the day, I felt tired but inspired and grateful- I was reminded that every training session and assessment offers a chance to learn, grow, and share knowledge.”
Jenny
Jenny Rolfe is a experienced Senior OT with a background in neuro-rehabilitation and specialist disability services. Since 2009, she has worked with the Motor Neurone Disease Association to improve wheelchair provision across the UK, bringing this expertise to her role at Accora through engaging, person-centred training for OTs and healthcare professionals.
“Today was a split-day training session in London- and it started bright and early! My alarm went off before sunrise, and by 7:15 am I was on the train to London. I arrived at Paddington Station around 8:05 am, then jumped on the tube across to Vauxhall. A quick (and rather rainy!) 10-minute walk later, and I arrived at our venue- The Oval.
Once in the training room, it was time to set up for the day. We had 30 attendees join us, and the hospitality at The Oval was fantastic. When Sarah arrived, we dived into her sessions- covering pressure mapping and, of course, plenty of sticking dots!
After a delicious lunch, the group got hands-on exploring the equipment and reviewing case studies. It’s always so rewarding to see participants engage with the practical side of postural care- asking questions, problem-solving, and sharing experiences.
We wrapped up around 3 pm, packed down the session, and by 4 pm I was back at Paddington. A final train home, and by 5:30 pm, I was through the door- ready for a well-earned cup of tea!
It was a busy, fulfilling day, filled with great conversations and learning, exactly what I love about being an OT.”
