Prevention and early intervention: improving safety at home and reducing hospital admissions

Supporting people to remain safe at home is a key priority across health and social care. Prevention and early intervention focus on identifying risks early and taking action to reduce harm, maintain independence, and avoid escalation of need.

This practical webinar will explore how occupational therapists and clinicians can use early intervention strategies and equipment to reduce risk in the home environment. Using case-based examples, we will demonstrate how simple, timely interventions can prevent falls, reduce functional decline, and support people to remain safely at home for longer.

The session will include live demonstrations using equipment such as the floor bed and specialist seating, linking clinical reasoning to real-world outcomes.

More than management: benefits of early recognition and intervention in adult dysphagia

Dysphagia affects millions of adults and is associated with significant health risks, including reduced quality of life, aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, dehydration and avoidable hospital admissions. While assessment and management of established dysphagia are well recognised, it is clear that a proactive MDT approach can support longer term health outcomes.

This webinar explores some of the evidence underpinning this proactive approach. We will examine risk factors for dysphagia, recognise early clinical indicators, and consider how timely intervention can reduce complications and support person-centred care. The session will also highlight the role of multidisciplinary working, oral health, nutrition, rehabilitation, and education in preventing dysphagia-related morbidity.

Sit smart: seating, positioning and pressure care in practice

For Occupational Therapists, seating and positioning are not only about posture- they directly influence skin integrity, function, participation, comfort, and long-term health outcomes. Poor alignment and inadequate support can significantly increase pressure injury risk, impact upper limb function, and limit occupational engagement.

In this webinar, we will explore how seating posture, pelvic alignment, and support surface selection influence pressure distribution in seated clients. Using an occupational therapy lens, the session will link biomechanical principles to functional performance, risk assessment, and real-world clinical decision-making.

A live demonstration using a pressure mapping system will compare alternative seating positions in real time, illustrating how subtle adjustments in pelvic positioning, trunk support, and cushion setup can dramatically change pressure distribution and risk profiles. All these factors can help better inform 24 hour positioning.

This session is ideal for Occupational Therapists working in wheelchair services, community practice, neurorehabilitation, long-term care, and complex seating provision who want to strengthen their pressure care assessment skills and intervention strategies.

Prescribing seating for cognitively impaired users: exploring the risks

On Demand

When prescribing seating, our aim is to meet the needs of the service user by prescribing a chair that will provide the right level of support, enable safe, easier assisted or independent transfers, reduce risk of pressure injuries and enable them to obtain and maintain a good sitting posture in the provided chair. However when a service user has a cognitive impairment and has poor risk awareness, additional risks are present. In this session we aim to outline some of these possible additional risks and how to overcome them to ensure the service user and their carers/family remain as safe as possible when the service user is seated in a chair that is there to meet their needs.
