Cellulitis is an infection of the skin that can occur anywhere on the body. It most commonly occurs on the lower limb. It is often misdiagnosed leading to unnecessary admissions and treatment. In this session we will cover what cellulitis is, how to recognise it, how to identify skin conditions often misdiagnosed as cellulitis and how to manage it.

In this webinar, Kay James will share videoed practical solutions and tips on how single carers can achieve optimum position when hoisting. She will also discuss some of the challenges faced, as well as having an open discussion alongside our OT, Jayne Brewer.

Identifying when patients are in their last year of life can be challenging. The same can be said for recognising dying. This webinar explores what is available to help us help the people we care for to better plan for the end of their life, and when the time comes to die well. Attendees will learn about the myths associated with palliative and end of life care, and have the opportunity to ask questions towards the end of the session.

A fourth workshop is to be delivered by the MND Assocation, during which they will explain their role, discuss the support they can provide to people living with MND, their families in Ireland, and the support they can give to you as health care professionals.

Session 1:

In this 45min webinar we will examine the aetiology andpathology involved with motor neurone disease. We will look at different types of presentations and how these differ in terms of physical presentation and prognosis. We will explore how MND is diagnosed and what treatment options there are currently. In addition, we will start to explore common symptoms which will require intervention to help manage to improve quality of life and extend life expectancy in people who are living with MND.

Megan Swann is a Consultant Occupational Therapist Master Trainer and Co-author of the Stepping On falls prevention programme in Australia NSW. She has over 30 years of experience. Stepping On, an evidence based programme, aims to equip participants with the knowledge, strength and confidence to prevent falls, stay active and remain independent.

The programme whilst founded in Australia by two Occupational Therapists is also now in 17 states of the US and a manual has been written for Spanish speakers in the US: www.steppingon.com.

She continues to run and train allied health workers to become Stepping On facilitators.

Pressure ulcers are a painful, debilitating condition that can, largely, be prevented. Seen as a measure of harm by NHS England/Improvement and reportable to the CQC in care home settings, understanding how best to protect those within your care from developing a pressure ulcer is an important aspect of care delivery.

Prevention of pressure ulcers is however not always easy and, in some cases, not possible. Understanding how they develop, how to recognise those at risk, how to prevent them and what to do when they do occur is vital knowledge for anyone involved in the care of those vulnerable to pressure ulcers.

Staff with different skill sets can work their way through the whole programme, or they can choose individual modules.

In this session we will explore the critical clinical reasoning process around whether you can sit out of bed with a pressure area. To celebrate OT week and Stop the pressure week, we wish to recognise the  importance of collaborative working. 

This session will explore the risks of sitting and the risks of staying in bed. We wish to  help clients make informed seating decisions to promote comfort, healing,  function and overall well being.
