Meet our Experts
Jayne qualified as an OT in 1996 and has a wide range of clinical experience in acute and community settings. Her recent experience has been in Community Equipment Stores providing training and support to prescribers and commissioners.
Kay James has been practicing as an Occupational therapist for the last 30 years. She started her Moving & Handling career at King’s College Hospital 26 years ago. Currently, Kay is the Director of OT4Independence Ltd based in Kent providing an Independent Occupational Therapy Service and Moving & Handling Training. She works with therapists from Health and Social Care to implement single carer handling to maximise an individual’s independence, dignity and quality of life. She also works with private care teams, schools, colleges, and local authorities across the South East.

Prescribing seating for cognitively impaired users: exploring the risks
When prescribing seating, our aim is to meet the needs of the service user by prescribing a chair that will provide the right level of support, enable safe, easier assisted or independent transfers, reduce risk of pressure injuries and enable them to obtain and maintain a good sitting posture in the provided chair. However when a service user has a cognitive impairment and has poor risk awareness, additional risks are present. In this session we aim to outline some of these possible additional risks and how to overcome them to ensure the service user and their carers/family remain as safe as possible when the service user is seated in a chair that is there to meet their needs.
