Dr Allatt astonishingly recovered from the rare condition, Locked In Syndrome, after her brainstem stroke at the age of 39. She wrote about her ‘buried alive’ experiences in her internationally published book ‘Running Free: Breaking out of Locked In Syndrome’. She has dedicated her life since to disrupting global, young stroke and disability issues. Her advocacy and global media notoriety about the improvement possibilities led to a surge from other families seeking her help who are affected by LIS worldwide.

Motor neurone disease and the vital role of occupational therapists
A series of three webinars by Jenny Rolfe looking at motor neurone disease and how occupational therapists can make all the difference to people living with MND and their families.
A fourth workshop is to be delivered by the MND Assocation, during which they will explain their role, discuss the support they can provide to people living with MND, their families in Ireland, and the support they can give to you as health care professionals.
Session 1:
In this 45min webinar we will examine the aetiology andpathology involved with motor neurone disease. We will look at different types of presentations and how these differ in terms of physical presentation and prognosis. We will explore how MND is diagnosed and what treatment options there are currently. In addition, we will start to explore common symptoms which will require intervention to help manage to improve quality of life and extend life expectancy in people who are living with MND.
Cellulitis – what is and isn’t cellulitis and what to do about it
Cellulitis is an infection of the skin that can occur anywhere on the body. It most commonly occurs on the lower limb. It is often misdiagnosed leading to unnecessary admissions and treatment. In this session we will cover what cellulitis is, how to recognise it, how to identify skin conditions often misdiagnosed as cellulitis and how to manage it.
Keeping Everyone Safe: Infection prevention during joint visits
We look at several aspects of infection prevention and control that are crucial to patient / client safety. Evonne will explain how micro-organisms behave, their capability of surviving in the environment and the modes of transmission. We then assess the risks in what we do, and what we need to do in order to prevent the risk of new infections spreading to both the patient / client and ourselves.
